It is official. American Idol to return on ABC

ABC has won the bid to host the rerun of American Idol’s comeback season as announced by the network. It was only last year in January when the show bid goodbye after the completion of it’s fifteenth and supposedly final season, as FOX decided to wrap it up.

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement, “American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon. ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams.”

Dungey also took a dig at FOX, the network which previously used to run the iconic show and wrapped it up last year due to dropped ratings. “Idol is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABC’s lineup of addictive fan favorites alongside Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor,” he said. “America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol.”

It has not been confirmed yet whether the show will feature the same panel of judges (the last season was judged by Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr), but Ryan Seacrest will reportedly be joining back the show’s ABC revival as a host.

(On a side note, let us just collectively acknowledge the fact, that the original trio of judges – Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, can never be toppped)

ABC reportedely won the bid over FOX and NBC to revive the show on their network.

It would be interesting to see if ABC brings something new on the platter, since the past couple of seasons of the show failed to generate the kind of spark it’s earlier seasons did.
