Jenifer Lewis – who starred alongside Whitney Houston, in the 1996 released Holiday fantasy-comedy, ‘The Preacher’s Wife’ has revealed she once attempted to talk the late songstress into therapy – a suggestion, as Lewis says, Houston quickly brushed aside.
PEOPLE reports an exclusive excerpt from Jenifer’s upcoming memoir, ‘The Mother Of Black Hollywood’ which briefly mentions her candid encounter with Houston, who she had gotten close with, during the filming of the Penny Marshall directed movie.
“Whitney and I took to each other like eggs and bacon,” Lewis writes on the close bond she shared with Houston.
The actress, who herself went under therapy, to seek treatment on her sex addiction and bipolar disorder – tried to pass on the benefits of the same to Houston, who was seemingly in distress at that time.
“I said to her, ‘You know Whitney, I went to therapy to take care of my challenges, and baby …’ Before I could say another word she whipped her head around and said, ‘Oh no Mama! My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will take care of me,’ ” Lewis recalls the incident. “She said it with such fervor and determination that I never brought it up again.”
The Preacher’s Wife was filmed around the same time, when according to Houston’s 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey, she was abusing drugs on an ‘almost daily’ basis.
‘The Mother of Black Hollywood’, summing up Lewis’ journey to stardom and the things she learned along the way, is stated for a release on November 14.
