Padman star, Akshay Kumar says sanitary napkins should be freely available at zero costs

After spreading aware on the subject of public defecation and the need for toilets, Akshay Kumar has taken up another prevalent social taboo in India as he's ventured out to promote his upcoming movie on menstrual hygiene, 'Padman.'

Back from an extended vacation in South Africa with his family, Kumar is now at full-swing to promote the R. Balki directorial venture and is taking up media questions in press conferences.

Attending one such promotional event in Mumbai, the actor was questioned about the government's decision to impose GST on sanitary pads and here is what he had to say:

“Why just cut down on GST? I think women should have free access to sanitary napkins. This is their basic necessity. It is about menstrual hygiene and not luxury.”

He further added:

“It is unfortunate and I am ashamed to say that 82 percent women in India have no access to sanitary pads and they are treated as if they are outsiders, and are made to sleep in the veranda.”

Speaking on removing the taboo surrounding the subject of girls hitting puberty and menstrual cycles, Akshay Kumar insisted that the same should be celebrated and not treated as something to feel embarrassed about.

Here is what he had to say:

“When you celebrate the fact that a girl has hit puberty, the girl, who is already going through a physical and hormonal change, will feel that something good has happened to her and she will be more confident and secured. I don’t understand why we Indians think that we need to hide anything related to periods.”

Great to say Akshay take up another social cause with his new venture.

'Pad Man' - which also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in significant roles, sees Kumar play the lead protagonist whose search for better menstrual hygiene measures for his disturbed wife, leads him to become one of the biggest manufacturers of low-cost sanitary napkins in India.

'Pad Man' is based on the true story of Arunachalam Muruganantham from Tamil Nadu and is stated for a release later this month.
