Aretha Franklin Tribute at ‘Black Girls Rock’, Showed How Its Really Done!

‘Black Girls Rock’ gave the late Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin a tribute we all were much yearning for, especially after the bizarre and self-indulgent, worded “homage” by Madonna at the VMA’s.

Sunday night’s airing of the show featured Grammy award winner Fantasia deliver roof-raising versions of two of Franklin’s biggest classics – ‘Chain Of Fools’ and ‘Respect’, which basically had the audience jumping on their feet and dancing in praise.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Fantasia was followed by a vocally-extravagant medley by some of the finest divas in RnB, which included – Jazmine Sullivan, Ledisi, Cynthia Erivo, Stephanie Mills and Yolanda Adams, giving stunning renditions of the late legend’s classics.

While Jazmine easily riffed her way through the toughest portions of ‘I Never Loved A Man’, Ledisi modulated the iconic climax of ‘Ain’t No Way’ leading several people in the audience to their feet. Cynthia sang a flawless rendition of ‘Say A Little Prayer’ and left the stage for Stephanie, whose arrival alone resulted into an instant standing ovation from the crowd.

Stephanie, the most seasoned diva in the group of performers, sang not one but two soulful Franklin classics – ‘Until You Come Back To Me’ and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, inviting the phenomenal Yolanda Adams – who, as usual, took everyone to church by the end of it all.
