In the decades long history of Hip-Hop – the genre has seen a number of legendary female MC’s, who have helped shape-up the music scene for other aspirants to follow. From Lauryn Hill to MC Lyte, the largely male-dominated genre, has seen a variety of females over the years who have proven their metal, on stage and on charts.
From Lyte’s 1988-released “Lyte as a Rock” – which was the first full-fledged solo album by a female MC, to the recent record-breaking success received by the likes of Cardi B and Nicki Minaj (The former has actually become the only female rapper with more than one Billboard Hot 100 #1 song to her name. She has 3.) – the genre has now evolved into something which is not only barrier breaking but also something that is bankable and commercially viable.
But if you were to solely assess the ability of these performers to ‘break it down’ with their talent, to express themselves by penning down their words over popping beats and to kill it not just in the studio, but also in their live performances – who would you consider for the title of – ‘The best female rapper of all time!’?
