After a long wait, the much-anticipated first-ever official documentary by Whitney Houston’s estate has finally been given a release date.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker – Kevin MacDonald, the documentary, which had been in the works for over a year – during which the release of an unauthorized film was opportuned by British filmmaker, Nick Broomfield, will now be released on July 6 in theaters across the U.S.

Getting an edge over the unofficial documentaries , Kevin’s project was given a limitless access to Houston’s vault – allowing him to dig into the archival footage from both her personal and professional lives.

So not only will you get to see some never-before-seen footage from her concerts, but also ‘home-footage’ of her personal moments kept in store by the family.

Being released by Roadside Attractions and Miramax, the project will also make it to the big screens in the U.K. and Ireland on the same date as that of U.S., while the release dates for other countries are yet to be announced.

According to Houston’s website, “Whitney (apparently, the name given to the documentary) is the intimate, definitive account of the superstar’s life and career” and will include “previously unreleased recordings, rare never-before-seen footage and live performances recorded by Houston at various stages her life, as well as original studio recordings and acapellas of some of the late singer’s greatest hits.”

Speaking on the ambitious project, Kevin Macdonald said, “I approached Whitney’s life like a mystery story; why did someone with so much raw talent and beauty self-destruct so publicly and painfully?”

The project, being supported by Houston’s family and estate, will also have access to never-before-seen material from the vaults. “I was lucky enough to have the support of Pat Houston and the Whitney Houston estate in this quest,” Kevin said. “They entrusted me with the ‘keys to the vault’ while giving me complete freedom to follow the story wherever it went.”

Macdonald further stated how the movie will reveal a woman that even Houston’s biggest fans didn’t know about.

“At heart, Whitney is an intimate family story that reveals a new side to a woman that even her most die-hard fans never knew.”

Miramax also possesses the rights to other territories like Canada, Latin America, CIS, Benelux and China – so expect a release date there too!

“This is a film that will truly thrill all who knew and loved her as a musician, actress, model and so much more,” said Pat Houston, the president and manager of Whitney’s estate.

“…an amazing retrospective that celebrates Whitney with never-before-see footage…”
