The legendary songbird of India, Lata Mangeshkar turns 88 today.

In an illustrious career spanning almost seven decades, Mangeshkar has sung over 25,000 songs and established herself as the pinnacle and the epitome of playback singing in the world of music. Her enchanting and spell-binding tonal quality has inspired generations of female singers to follow in her footsteps, setting the benchmark for vocal greatness.

But despite, a career graph as prominent as her's, the legendary songstress hasn't lost the desire to do more and still wants to continue to sing.

In an interview with Hindustan Times' HT Cafe, the iconic vocalist spoke on how, although she's satisfied with what she has achieved over the years, she is still open to do more. "Even now, I have a desire to sing more. If I get a chance to sing anything good, I will definitely do that," she told HT.

However, she did add that she is more inclined towards singing devotional songs now. "I haven’t sung in films but I have sung non-film songs such as devotional songs including bhajans etc," she said, "I personally like them a lot. Honestly, I don’t really like singing for films nowadays."

But that doesn't mean, she isn't open to something substantial which comes her way, outside the helm of devotional music. "It has been some time since I last sang. But now, I am planning to and I will definitely sing in the coming days," she said.

Reflecting back on her younger years, the songstress spoke on how birthdays have never been that exciting for her and how the definition of the same changed, during her younger years when her family was not in a position to celebrate.

"Due to our circumstances, celebrating birthdays became out of question," she said. "Now, I can celebrate my birthday, but I haven’t forgotten what happened in the past. So, I have never been kicked about birthdays. Maybe, others could be but not me."

Through all the decades of singing playback for several Bollywood movies, Lata Mangeshkar has lent her voice to lead heroines ranging from Sadhna, Waheeda Rehman, Madhubala to Rekha, Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit and even the more recent ones like Aishwarya Rai, Kajol, Preity Zinta and several others.

Speaking to HT, she also expressed her opinion on the appearances of the leading ladies of Bollywood from this era, and how the times and trends have changed.

"Maybe we have an old-world view to feel that way, so I don’t blame anyone for this. If that’s what’s working these days and actresses are following a trend, then it’s okay. Personally, I don’t like the kind of clothes and all that actors wear these days."

Until the legend decides to record something again, here's a little taste of her impeccable and sublime gift that can never be duplicated by anyone else:

Happy Birthday Lata Mangeshkar.

Long live the Queen of music.
