Kirron Kher spoke out in reaction to the Chandigarh gangrape incident, and offered a word of advice for the victim.

The BJP MP, suggested that the 22 year old woman, who was brutally raped by an auto driver and two of his companions while returning to her PG, should have avoided boarding the auto after seeing that it already had two other men sitting inside it.

Here is what she said:

Bachi ki samajhdaari ko bhi main thoda sa kehna chahti hun… saari bachiyon ko.. ki already jab koi teen aadmi baithe hue hain uske andar… to aapko usme nahi chadhna chaeye tha….I am saying this to protect the girls.

Kher also added that parents should guide and educate boys from the beginning, creating an environment - where they are taught to respect women in their homes first.

Insaan vahishi banta ja raha hai… people should educate their boys. Even in the family, when father doesn’t respect mother, that does create an impact on the kids.

Although, it is agreeable that when the system fails to safeguard you from the hands of potential assaulters, you have to safeguard yourself by staying alert and cautious in every way you can - but when a public figure, particularly a politician's immediate reaction puts the spotlight on the victim, it feeds on the same mentality that breeds in the minds of such perpetrators and in a way, makes them feel that their actions are being validated.

So even if Kher's heart was in the right place while guiding young girls on being cautious and taking care of themselves, the timing for a suggestion like this was not necessarily right, as it may involuntarily have triggered the notion of victim-blaming, further.

Kher's response in that regard, has been receiving mixed responses from people across internet.
