Veteran actress Shammi dead at the age of 89. Amitabh Bachchan pays homage.

Veteran character actress Nargis Rabdi, who popularly went by the name - Shammi, has passed away at the age of 89.

One of the most recognizable on-screen mother/grandmother to several Bollywood and television actors, Shammi acted in over 100 films in her 60+ years career.

News of her death started circulating over the net earlier today and Amitabh Bachchan was one of the first celebs to announce and mourn it on his Twitter handle.

“Shammi Aunty .. prolific actress, years of contribution to the Industry, dear family friend .. passes away ..!! A long suffered illness, age ..Sad .. slowly slowly they all go away ...” he wrote.

Sanjay Dutt's sister, Priya Dutt also payed homage to the veteran actress with a small eulogy on her Twitter handle.

"Shammi aunty to me and a great actor of yesteryears passed away today. She was my mother’s dear friend and someone we all loved very much. May her soul rest in peace and her laughter and contagious smile rock the heavens. Be In peace with your friends," Priya wrote.

Born in Mumbai in a Parsi family, Shammi started her career in Bollywood as a lead actress back in the early 50's, also prominently being featured in characterestic comical supporting roles in movies like 'Half Ticket', 'Halaku', 'The Train' and several others.

Later through the 80's and 90's, she was re-introduced to a younger audience through her work in television and films, as the most recognizable on-screen grandmother in popular family-shows and soap operas.
