2018 is coming to a full closure and we have to look back and celebrate the best of what it had to offer.
It is that time of the year again – when Soundpasta readers get to pick their favorite musical acts of the year, who stood out and above the rest.
But before you place your vote, here’s a brief review of some of the most remarkable musical moments of 2018:
The year was filled with a number of diva comebacks – with the likes of Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Toni Braxton attempting to give us ‘that old vibe’ with noteworthy new releases. Out of the three, Toni also managed to grab a few Grammy nods for her work, including one for her ultra-catchy single, ‘Long As I Live.’
Christina Aguilera also managed to grab headlines with her ‘Liberation’ album and tour, and a smashing duet with Demi Lovato.
The year also saw the remarkable ascend of Cardi B, who rose from being an Instagram and reality TV star – to one of the hottest female rappers in the business, breaking multiple records with her Grammy nominated release, ‘Invasion Of Privacy.’
Rappers continued to show their dominance as Drake emerged as the most successful act in Billboard Hot 100, earning more entries on the chart than any other artist during the period. The Canadian rapper also managed to place seven of his singles from ‘Scorpion’ inside the Top 10 – at the same time, breaking an age-old record previously held by The Beatles.
John Legend made history by becoming the first African American male artist to earn the EGOT status – i.e., someone who’s won all four of the ‘biggies’ in the award circuit – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The 40 year old crooner also released his first Holiday album – ‘A Legendary Christmas’ in October and premiered a Christmas television special with wife Chrissy Teigen in November.
Ed Sheeran was placed atop Forbes magazine’s list of the year’s highest grossing world tours, while the likes of Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Jay Z, Bruno Mars and Pink rounded off the top 5, and left their mark with major worldwide tours.
Ariana Grande scored her career’s first chart-topper on Billboard Hot 100, after a number of up’s and down’s in her personal life, while Lady Gaga soared with her breakthrough role in ‘A Star Is Born’ and the success of its accompanying soundtrack.
If this makes it difficult for you to decide your favorite act of the year. It should.
The year was certainly eventful and saw several memorable musical milestones!
