Rolling Stones Magazine had once curated a list of what their editors thought were the ‘100 Greatest Singers Of All Time’ and it then layed somewhere in dust with the zillion other such lists that have been created before or since.
But apparently its just now that Twitterati is discovering the ‘controversial’ picks of the ‘mainly Rock’ publication and they are certainly not happy with some of the placements.
The ongoing online debate is mainly focused on Whitney Houston’s eyebrow-raising poor placement on #34, making social media call the whole list a big ‘rock purist’ sham!
While you’d find several other lists online with Houston’s placement being at least in the Top 3, people’s couldn’t let go off the ‘blasphemy’ done by Stones more than a decade ago.

Placing Houston at #34, the list sees artists like Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Bono and even Roy Orbinson – placed ahead of her.
Yes! Bono, better than THE Whitney Houston, according to Stones. While a lot of these ‘singers’ are known for their music and songwriting skills, few of them come to your mind when you think about ‘great singing.’
Although we have known about this list for years and have already thrown it into the bin, check out some of these reactions from Twitter of people who just found out about it:
1)
Only in the universe of off-key, one-note, and monotone would Bob Dylan be a better singer than Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, and Patti Labelle. This list was obviously compiled by Dakota-Josh and Meghan-Kate. 😒 https://t.co/OpeNVIeFcK

The #RollingStone list of the “Best” singers of all time is garbage. Where’s Pavarotti? Where’s Maria Callas? Where’s Julie Andrews? Where’s Betty Buckley? RS didn’t say “Best Rock/Pop/Country Singers.” They said “Best Singers” (And don’t get me started on Bob Dylan at No. 7)

Freddie Mercury and Whitney Houston aren’t in the Top 10 but Bob Dylan is? At least Rolling Stone managed to get #1 and #2 right. That’s about it.#RollingStone #Top100Singers #MusicMonday https://t.co/Ay6UA0hlWV

Bullshit .. #WhitneyHouston should be number 1! And as much as I love #JohnLennon we can all agree Freddie Mercury is above him. https://t.co/pLJitIUsfA

Whitney Houston at number 34 on a top 100 list of all time greatest singers?

I cannot accept a list that ranks Whitney Houston as the THIRTY-FOURTH greatest singer of all time. That’s absurd. https://t.co/xO8ilYbkDn

Whitney Houston should be number 1. Luther Vandross should be number 2. Mariah Carey, Gladys Knight and Patti Labelle should be higher. Elvis Pressley should be lower. And Celine Dion, Roberta Flack, Nat “King” Cole and Barbra Streisand should be on this list. https://t.co/PBbZDkwKgX

lol #RollingStones list has that mumbling gravel muncher Dylan is 7 but Bowie with his massive range is at 23, something tells me they threw 200 names in a hat then drew 100 and wrote down the order they drew them in to make the list, it all seems random AF

I can’t take a list seriously that puts Elvis ahead of Sam Cooke. 🙄

John Lennon?! I guess he was an okay songwriter and musician, but he was NOT a good singer. Okay at best.

I don’t know what’s worse, putting Whitney at #34 or Bob Dylan on it at all (I appreciate his song writing and singing style but come on man)
