Two men stabbed to death in Portland after saving Muslim girls from a racial attack

Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Rocky John Best were stabbed to death by a man uttering violence-inciting slogans against the two women in a Portland train. Both Meche and Best lost their lives while attempting to save two Muslim women from an Islamophobic attack in the train.

The incident occurred on May 26 in Portland, when Jeremy Joseph Christian began to shout “all Muslims must die”, when two teenage girls boarded the same train he was in. Three men stepped-in to defend the girls, which is when Christina pulled out a knife and stabbed all three them. While the third man, 21 year old Micah David-Cole Fletcher, survived his injuries, Best and Meche succumbed to the wounds inflicted by the weapon.

Christian, was arrested soon after the incident on Friday and is being held in the Multnomah County Jail on grounds of aggravated murder, attempted murder, intimidation and being a felon in possession of weapon.

Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, was a 23 year old former student of Reed College in Portland, who also posted a tribute for him on Facebook, shortly after his death was confirmed by his mother, Asha Deliverance. “My dear baby boy passed on yesterday while protecting two young Muslim girls from a racist man on the train in Portland. He was a hero and will remain a hero on the other side of the veil. Shining bright star I love you forever,” she wrote in her Facebook post.

Rick Best, who also lost his life, while protecting the two girls, was a 53 year old father of four and an army veteran, whom his colleagues described as someone they always approached for any sort of help.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler paid tribute to both men stating the two “died heroes as a result of a horrific act of racist violence”.

A small memorial was setup at the place the two were stabbed where people came in to pay their respect.
