RnB diva Mary J. Blige is finally opening up about her troubled relationship with ex-husband Kendu Isaacs, and the very public divorce and separation proceedings.
The Grammy award winning singer-songwriter spoke about the her struggle through the separation during the last couple of years and how an album consisting of her experiences through the whole process, was created.
Mary sat down with journalist Tamron Hall to talk about how she’s been keeping up with all that’s being talked about.
“When I first started writing this album I was fighting for my marriage. There were a lot of layers to me peeled back for this marriage. I really thought I did find the love of my life,” Blige told Hall.
“I don’t know if people seen the last eight or five years of my life, but its been hell,” she said. “And its been ugly and its been public and its been nasty. So, in the midst of all that. And the stuff that people don’t even know about — fighting for my life, fighting for my marriage, fighting for my morals and everything — I discovered my strength. My strength, my real strength is discovered.”
The 46 year old songstress filed for divorce from her husband of over 13 years, back in 2016 citing “irreconcilable differences” – however it was later claimed by a few close sources that an alleged affair carried out by Isaacs, with one of Mary’s best friends, played a role in creating a rift between the two.
During her ongoing divorce legal proceedings, the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul was ordered to pay $30,000 a month in spousal support to her former husband. The court stated that Mary was liable to temporarily accommodate Isaacs with the bare minimum for a lifestyle he was accustomed to while living with the RnB superstar.
But Blige hasn’t let any of it break her spirit or deter her from staying true to what she does best.
The ‘Family Affair’ hit-maker further talked about how her experience helped to tell her story through her latest LP, ‘Strength Of A Woman’ – which is yet again, a personal account of Mary’s life, capturing its up’s and down’s.
“I believe that I wasn’t given this career or this job as a singer or this gift from God to sit down and say, ‘I’m going to suffer from the world in silence and die.’ And it’s therapeutic for me as well. So, you know, that’s why. It’s not just for me.”
