Yes. Bobby Brown is laying claims it was him who taught the King of Pop, perhaps his biggest signature move on stage – The Moonwalk.
Michael Jackson, popularized the dance move during his performance of ‘Billie Jean’ on ‘Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever’ back in the year 1983, in which he would effortlessly glide backward, creating the illusion that he was being pulled backwards while attempting to actually go forward.
Anyway – in his recent interview with The Cypher, Brown claims he started doing the step way before Motown 25 and happened to teach Jackson during a visit to his house.
“I had a few moves that was just super,” he told The Cypher. “Plus, I was the first one in Orchard Park to do the moonwalk. So, the moonwalk was one of my signature moves. Nobody. I had brought it up from down South. It was something that just killed the game once I brought it up the East Coast.”
Brown then recollected the incident when he “introduced” the late Pop legend with the move when he along with the rest of his New Edition members, visited Jackson’s house.
“Actually, I was the one that taught Michael how to do it,” Brown said, further stating how they after being invited to his home, they had an impromptu dance session in “this big room with mirrors,” – which is when MJ spotted and Brown pulling-off the step.
“We was poppin,’ he was watchin’ us pop,” he said. “He saw me do the moonwalk. And he [asked], ‘What is that?’ And I did it again. He just watched it, and he just started doin’ it.”
Brown did give Jackson credit for perfecting the move the way he couldn’t and stated that he learned it himself from a fellow in Alabama.
