Nicki Minaj credits herself for “reintroducing” female rapper to the mainstream.
The ‘Anaconda’ hitmaker appeared for an interview on the latest issue of XXL, and discussed her impact in hip-hop, citing her presence as one that filled the void of female rappers in the Pop market.
“My role in hip-hop has been super unique because when my first album came out, there had been so much time where there wasn’t a female rap album out that went platinum,” Minaj said. “There wasn’t a big female rap presence right before I got in. So, my role was really reintroducing the female rapper to pop culture.”
Minaj further spoke on how she vouched for big opportunities when she entered the industry, making the brand of ‘female rappers’ bankable.
“I don’t think [female rappers] got that much credit. I think female rappers have always been dope and influential, but I think I sort of came in at a time where big business was paying attention, so I was able to capitalize off of a lot of deals and business ventures. I aligned myself with a lot of brands, and I was able to show that a female rapper was able to sell products.”
Minaj’s interview on the subject comes only few days after Cardi B grabbed all the headlines for becoming the first female rapper in almost 2 decades to score a solo #1 record on the Billboard Charts, further heating up the debates on whether she has officially become a ‘threat’ to Nicki.
