Missy Elliot has been chosen as one of the honorees at the upcoming ‘Black Women In Music’ event organized by ESSENCE magazine.
The legendary rapper and music producer, will be handed over the recognition for her outstanding artistic and career accomplishments.
Speaking on Elliot’s several feats, ESSENCE Editor-in-Chief, Vanessa De Luca said, “The artistry of Missy Elliott cuts across generations—underscored by her vast creative accomplishments and contributions to the culture.”
Showering more praise on the musician, Luca further added, “So prolific is her work, she is an inspiration to women all over the world. Missy’s energetic presence is truly magnetic and we can’t wait to celebrate her as one of the artistic masterminds of our time.”
Missy started off her musical career in the early 90’s, as part of an all-female R&B girl group ‘Sista.’ After a number of collaborations with other artists, it wasn’t until 1997, Elliot kicked off her solo music career with her iconic debut LP, ‘Supa Dupa Fly’ (Remember that one?). It became the highest charting debut LP for a female rapper, peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200 charts.
‘Fly’ was followed by a string of other multi-platinum selling studio projects like ‘Da Real World’, ‘Under Construction’ and ‘This Is Not A Test!’ and several iconic singles like ‘Get Ur Freak On’, ‘Gossip Folks’ and ‘Work It’ – which turned her into one of the best selling female rappers in Nielsen history!

Honoring these accomplishments by Elliot and celebrating the contribution of other black female artists in music, the 2018 BWIM event will be held on January 25 at the Highline Ballroom in NYC as a pre-Grammy celebration.
