After much hullabaloo the 2020 Academy awards came to a conclusion, delivering a number of surprises in a couple of prominent categories.
While the expected wins were all in the acting categories, as Joaquin Phoenix, Renee Zellweger, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern – took home the awards, as they did in pretty much every other award show this season.
The big surprise came with the multiple wins of Bong Joon-ho-directed critically acclaimed drama, ‘Parasite’ – which took home 4 awards in total, including Best Director and Best Picture. It also marked the first time in Oscar-history that a foreign-language film took home the top prize.
Hildur Guðnadóttir – became the first-ever female to win in the ‘Best Original Score’ category, for her masterful work in ‘The Joker’, and the likes of Janelle Monae and Cynthia Erivo raised the roof with their musical performances.
While Erivo was bested by others in both of the categories she was nominated in (Best Original Song and Best Actress), Renee Zellweger’s heartbreaking performance certainly deserved all the accolades it got. It can easily be called ‘the best of the year’ topping her fellow nominees – Scarlet Johansson, Charlize Theron, Saoirse Ronan and Erivo.
