Lil Nas is reflecting back at the time he was still living in the closet, and hadn’t announced his sexuality to the world.
The ‘Old Town Road’ rapper came out as gay, soon after the success of his breakthrough single last year and broke several doors in current mainstream music, particularly among black males.
In a recent interview with Guardian, Nas states that it certainly wasn’t easy thinking about coming out – being a mainstream male artist, and that he planned to die with it remaining a secret.
“The honest truth is, I planned to die with the secret,” he was quoted telling the publication. “But that changed when I became Lil Nas X.”
He further reflected on the subject:
“I 100 percent want to represent the LGBT community. I don’t want to encourage them to do something they don’t 100 percent want to do. Especially in, like, middle school or high school. Because it’s just super-hard.”
But his family situation still remains a little tensed, since his coming out.
“My family knows now,” he said. “But it’s not something that’s ever brought up or we speak about. We’re quiet on it. Nobody’s like, ‘Oh, you got a boyfriend?’
