She Had a ‘Vision Of Love’: Throwback to Mariah Carey’s First Grammy Performance

It was the year 1991, and Mariah Carey was freshly into the game – as the next big thing among female performers, curating her niche based on a template that had already turned fellow-diva, Whitney Houston into a global superstar, some 5 years ago.

The singer’s self-titled debut album, released a year before, was up for a number of awards at the year’s Grammy’s – including two nods in the top categories – Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

She would eventually take home two trophies for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best New Artist.

Same night, Carey also took the Grammy stage for the first time, to deliver a stellar performance of her Billboard chart-topping, and career-defining first single, ‘Vision Of Love.’

Dressed in a short one-piece dress, glammed-up by her face-covering curls and long earrings, the singer came prepared to showcase her vocal gift, to a crowd filled with some of the biggest musicians of the time.

Caressing each note with her gorgeous tone, and taking us to that show-stopping finale, displaying her whistling 6th octave notes, Mariah Carey was in full command of her talent, since the beginning.

Despite her evident nerves, from it being her debut Grammy performance, Carey nailed it out of the park, as usual.
