Faye Dunaway feels guilty for ‘messing it up’ at the Oscars

It was probably the most embarrassing moment in Academy award history when Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced the wrong winner for ‘Best Picture’.

The initial blame, was being put on Beatty but people quickly realized that he was confused after reading the wrong name and paused for a minute, but Faye went ahead and announced what was probably the pamplet for Emma Watson’s ‘Best Actress’ Oscar win for La La Land.

Faye has finally spoken about the incident in an interview with NBC Nightly News’ Lester Holt. The actress reflected back on the incident and mentioned that she felt ‘completely stunned and very guilty’ after the mess-up.

“I thought, ‘I could have done something, surely,” she said. “Why didn’t I see Emma Stone’s name on the top of the card?”

It wasn’t really the fault of any of the two stars while announcing the name, they were just handed over the wrong pamphlet. So the blame needs to be put on someone else and not them. The only thing they couldn’t do, was react promptly to it and act on it, probably because everything happens so fast at the Oscars and you have to rush with your job.

The only thing that happened was they received another copy of the ‘Best Actress’ envelope instead of the one containing the name of the ‘Best Picture’ winner, which is where the whole confusion originated from.

She further stated in her interview, “He took the card out, and he didn’t say anything. He paused, he looked over me, offstage, he looked around, and I finally said, ‘You’re impossible.’ I thought he was joking. I mean, I thought he was stalling. Warren’s like that. He kind of holds the power and makes you wait … but it’s part of his charm.”

By the time everyone could realize that something had gone wrong, La La Land’s name was announced, and a couple of acceptance speeches were already given – which made it the most cringe-worthy moment of the award season.

The Academy had later apologized for the mix-up of the envelopes.

Poor Faye, took a lot of heat for that from viewers.
