The 'Icon Award' was started by Billboard back in the year 2011, with the first recipient being, Neil Diamond, followed by Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez and most recently - Celine Dion.
Cher has previously won 2 Billboard awards in competitive categories. The total number of awards won by the diva goes up to 163, which includes one Emmy, 3 Golden Globes, One Grammy and One Oscar among several other accolades.

Cher, who is currently busy with her Las Vegas residency show, "Classic Cher", would also give her first Award-show performance in over 15 years, as the 'I Got You Babe' superstar will be performing her 1998 record-breaking smash-hit, 'Believe.'

In a statement released to media outlets, Cher stated, '“I’m honored to receive the 2017 Billboard Music Awards Icon Award and take the stage to celebrate my love of music with my fans,”

She further added, “Seeing so many powerful artists — especially female artists emerge and take their place in history through the years — has been incredible. I’m honored to be amongst the previous Icon Award winners and to celebrate this milestone achievement by performing ‘Believe’ on the show.”

In a career spanning over 5 decades, Cher has won several accolades and sold over 100 million records. Her last studio effort, "Closer to the Truth," released in 2013 peaked at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts.

The 2017 Billboard Music Awards are scheduled to be telecast on Sunday, May 21 at 8 P.M. ET on ABC.
