Mariah Carey’s former choreographer and creative director, Anthony Burrell is finally speaking out on state of her live performances, after keeping mum since being thrown out of her camp.
Following Mimi’s infamous New Year’s Rockin’ Eve fiasco, wherein the singer-songwriter faced a “technical glitch” with her pre-recorded performance – pushing her to just awkwardly walk around the stage until the end of the song, Carey had fired Burrell and replaced him with Bryan Tanaka – perhaps in an attempt to do some damage-control and pass on the blame onto someone as a “creative mishap.”
Things have not been that smooth for Carey after that disastrous performance either. With another footage from one of her Las Vegas shows – which went viral for her showing zero interest in moving along with the dancers during her routine, Carey has lately been the subject of much criticism and ridicule.
Anthony – who’s kept his silence since his separation from Mimi finally layed his views on the current state of her rather live shows – which are yet again bringing the songstress in a negative light.
In a telephonic interview with Complex, Burrell said, “It’s just typical Mariah. Mariah is clear: when she doesn’t wanna do something, she doesn’t do it. She’s performing with lackluster and no f*cks given, and it’s taking away her star.”
Speaking on what works best for Mariah, Burrell said that the focus of her performances should remain her singing, without putting much strain on the choreography.
“Working with an artist like Mariah, who’s not a mover first, it’s always a challenge to get them to think physically and not just vocally,” he said while speaking to Complex. “You always have to keep in mind that they’re a singer first. The priority is not teaching them 100 counts of 8, or endless routines. I wanted to give Mariah a modern push to revamp her, give her a fresher, more modern feel, make her more aware of her body and her lines, and not look like her feet hurt when she’s walking.”
Burrell further continued to state how her current team lacks the right direction, “You’re a legend. But you don’t care, your team doesn’t care. They’re not guiding and directing her. She’s back to where she was before. It’s not like she’s never looked this bad before; I just stepped her game up.”
