Remembering Whitney Houston with her soul-stirring ‘My Man’ medley from 1991 Billboard awards

In the year 1991, after the massive success of Whitney Houston’s third studio album, ‘I’m Your Baby Tonight’, the powerhouse diva performed a sublime medley of three quintessential love ballads from three different eras of music, at the 2nd annual Billboard awards. The same night she was also honored with 4 trophies for the chart success of her album.

Introduced to stage by her cousin Dionne Warwick, Whitney started off her 3 song medley with the Billie Holiday classic – ‘Lover Man’, smoothly sliding off to a passionate and soulful rendition of Barbra Streisand’s ‘My Man’ – taking it to such places which was perhaps never thought-of before, and then concluding the medley with a showstopping rendition of her own #1 hit single, ‘All The Man That I Need’.

Miss Houston’s voice had that extra soulful gospel edge that night, as she performed the three songs back to back and gave a new meaning to all of them. A rather roof-raising rendition of her own classic brought out a more gritty and raw sound, as compared to the previous performances of the song around the same time.

From the celestial notes to the spell-binding stage presence – the grandeur of this performance was essentially, Whitney Houston.

August 9, 2017 would have marked, the legendary vocalist’s 54th birthday, whose untimely passing in 2012 left an irrevocable void in music.

We remember this icon and vocal genius today, with one of her greatest performances from television.
