Jay Z kicked off Meadows music and art festival in New York City this Friday and made sure to leave no stones unturned when it came to keeping his music as socially relevant as its always been.
The 47 year old Rap mogul, gave a shout out to American football quarterback, Colin Kaepernick – who has been embroiled in controversies following his decision to not stand up during the US national anthem at the start of every game.
Kaepernick’s stance, which has led him to remain unsigned since departure from San Francisco’s 49ers, was triggered as a protest against police brutalities towards people of color in the US.
While commencing a performance for one of his most racially-charged tracks, ‘The Story of O.J.’, Jay Z decided to dedicate the song to Kaepernick along with civil rights activist Dick Gregory and everyone who’ve ever had to overcome such obstacles.
“I want to dedicate this song to Colin Kaepernick tonight.”
He continued, “I want to dedicate this to Dick Gregory. I want to dedicate this song to anyone that was held back and you overcame.”
It takes a lot as a celeb to be vocal about such controversial subjects – but Jay Z is one of those people, who have never hesitated to speak their minds on things they have believed in.
