Serena Williams is feeling all kinds of emotional and filled with gratitude these days. And its only natural, as the 35 year old Tennis legend recently gave birth to her first child – baby girl, Alexis Olympia.

In an open letter to her mom, Oracene Price, the ace-athlete told how she was criticized and being called ‘a man’ despite of which she continued to work hard on her skills and took inspiration from her strong mother.

“I’ve been called man because I appeared outwardly strong,” Williams wrote. “It has been said that that I use drugs (No, I have always had far too much integrity to behave dishonestly in order to gain an advantage). It has been said I don’t belong in Women’s sports — that I belong in Men’s — because I look stronger than many other women do. (No, I just work hard and I was born with this badass body and proud of it).”

In the letter posted on Reddit, Williams mentioned how her baby also has has strong, muscular and powerful genes, whom she pledges to pass on the same principles of strength and courage that were given to her by her mother.

“I was looking at my daughter and she has my arms and legs! My exact same strong, muscular, powerful, sensational arms and body,” she wrote. “I hope to teach my baby Alexis Olympia the same, and have the same fortitude you have had.”

Writing an important note on body-positivity and the various forms, shapes and sizes, beauty can be embodied in, Williams also touched a subject, that perhaps, hits too close to home.

“We don’t all look the same. We are curvy, strong, muscular, tall, small, just to name a few, and all the same: we are women and proud!”
