Jake LaMotta – the renowned legendary boxer, whose life was the
subject of Robert DeNiro’s 1980 released Martin Scorsese directed film, ‘Raging Bull’, has died.
The iconic boxer, passed away in a nursing home following complications related to pneumonia. He was 95.
A close family member revealed more on his ailment, stating that the aging boxer’s health deteriorated in the last couple of weeks, after which he was put on a feeding tube.
Speaking to TMZ, Jake’s wife said: “I just want people to know, he was a great, sweet, sensitive, strong, compelling man with a great sense of humor, with eyes that danced.”
LaMotta began his boxing career in the year 1940’s and went on to win the World Middleweight Championship.
Regarded for his distinct style of fighting, and having a reputation of being a bully, LaMotta was known for viciously beating his opponents in the ring and getting involved in several brawls and fights outside of it.
One of LaMotta’s most iconic fights included a 6-match rivalry with boxer Sugar Ray Robinson – which was also portrayed in DeNiro’s biographical drama, which won the actor his second Academy award in the year 1981.
“Rest in Peace, Champ.” DeNiro said in a statement soon after his passing.
