Patti LaBelle – “Music Of Today Lacks ‘Substance’”

Patti LaBelle has been in the music business long enough to see how things have drastically changed over the decades.

The powerhouse performer and diva recently appeared as a competitor in The Masked Singer, revealing herself as ‘The Flower’ post her elimination from the show . But the 75 year old considers this just an experiment to try something new.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, the songstress dished on a number of subjects, one of which was her disapproval of how things are shaping in today’s music.

Ms LaBelle believes that the music of today indeed lacks some ‘substance.’

Here is what she was quoted telling in an interview with the website:

“Sixty years performing, and I see changes all the time. I never know if we’re going to ever go back to when real music was real music. Because a lot of things today, if a [song’s] title is ‘Get It Now’ or something, you’re going to hear ‘get it now’ the whole record, no substance. So there’s still some growth. And I hope that it goes back to substance.”

Speaking on the increasing usage of studio tactics and ‘computerised vocals’ that some of the performers of today have been using, LaBelle stated:

“Because some of them can’t really sing. I’m not saying it to knock anyone because that’s their hustle…but I’m still looking for substance.”

Patti did however list her few favourites from today’s music, who she believes can actually sing. Among those were names like, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia. She also showed some love to Adele and Alicia Keys.

Patti LaBelle never holds back and we love her for that. More than 6 decades into the music biz honey, she’s earned her right for it.
