Aretha Franklin’s Granddaughter Grace Franklin Auditions for ‘American Idol’ [See Video]

The late and great Aretha Franklin’s musical influence seems to have passed down to the younger generations of her family.

Case in point, her young grand-daughter – Grace Franklin.

The 15 year old music aspirant, recently made an appearance on American Idol – as a contestant.

Accompanied by her parents, for support, Grace took the judges by surprise when she told them about her late grandmother while introducing herself.

“I was really close with my grandma. I got to see her all the time. I used to travel with her a lot,” she said, remembering the iconic songstress. “I don’t think I could fully grasp the fact that she was known worldwide, because to me she was always just – ‘Grandma.'”

Grace, who’s the daughter of Aretha’s son – Kecalf Cunningham, then went on to sing, the classic – Killing Me Softly. With the pressure of being the grand-daughter of one of the greatest singers to ever walk the planet, the task certainly had to be nerve-wrecking.

Although her voice, divided the opinions of judges – Katy Perry and Lionel Richie – considering she’s still very young and discovering her instrument and art, but she’s nevertheless got the musical roots backing her up.

In any which case, Grace aspires to be her own artist, even though she admits that people expect her to sound like her legendary grandmother.

“I feel like people expect me to sing exactly like her, but I am my own artist and I have my own voice,” she said.
