When Whitney Houston Told Oprah That Bobby Brown Was Jealous Of Her Success And Stature

Whitney Houston’s tumultuous marriage with Bobby Brown has often been cited as part of the reason why her professional and personal life came spiraling down, from the pinnacle of Pop success.

The diva’s monumental success after her first three record-breaking albums, followed by a history-making performance of the Star Spangled Banner and a movie and soundtrack that cemented her legacy as one of the greatest female superstars of Hollywood, The Bodyguard, proved all too much to cope for her husband and partner of that time, Bobby Brown.



Brown, who was renowned in the RnB music scene, wasn’t quite an international phenomenon of the level of Houston. But then nobody quite was, back then. This reported jealousy was speculated for several years by tabloids, as a contributory factor to their bitter marriage, and was later confirmed by Whitney herself in her Oprah interview from 2009.

3 years after she divorced Brown, after 16 years of marriage, Whitney sat down for a lengthy talk about the up’s and down’s of her life, post has advent into showbiz – primarily focusing on her life after marriage and introduction to drugs. The interview was a never-before-heard insight into the life of one of the most fascinating figures in pop music.

In her interview, Whitney stated how ‘something happened to a man when a women had that much control and fame, when he didn’t have his own.’

Oprah nodded with the statement, asking if Whitney ever tried to play it down after that to keep peace at her home, and the singer agreed stating how she overcompensated by putting him forth, in many occasions – but it became worse.



This also reflected in Whitney’s constant effort to put her then husband front and center in everything – be it her acceptance speeches and interviews, or even changing the name of her company ‘Nippy Inc.’ to ‘Brown Productions’.
