The Academy Of Motion Pictures and Sciences has failed to create history and celebrate black artists again, this year, it seems.
This year in particular may have turned into a monumental moment in Academy history, as Andra Day and Viola Davis – were both front-runners in the Best Actress category, after having swept most other major awards.
It could have been the second only time in the 90+ year history of the award, for a black actress to have won the award (with Halle Berry being the only black actress to have bagged the honor for Monster’s Ball in 2002) – but the voters seemed to have taken a U-turn, taking the viewers by surprise.
For Best Actor, Chadwick Boseman – remained a frontrunner, having swept Screen Actor’s Guild and Golden Globes, for his heartbreaking performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and while practically all bets were on him this year, the Academy favored industry veteran – Anthony Hopkins, for his performance in The Father.
Naturally, social media erupted with memes as people once again called out the Academy for failing to recognize non-white talent in leading categories.
This year, it hits all the more hard, because it was almost certain that the two leading categories were going to be swept by people of color.
Once again, #OscarsSoWhite is seen trending on social media and here’s how people are responding:
1)
Chadwick and Viola were robbed. #Oscars2021 had to keep those best actor/actress awards squeaky white. #OscarsSoWhite

What a complete joke #Oscars is, you could've given Chadwick his last chance at the award but you suck.
What a disgrace.

It may be time to bring back the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag. Both lead actor/actress categories had well deserving Black nominees.
