2005 entirely belonged to Mariah Carey. After concluding the previous decade with back to back hit albums and singles, the high-octane singer and performer was looking for another mega hit project that she couldn’t find with her early 2000’s releases.
But The Emancipation of Mimi, her 10th studio album, was going to be it. The album became her most critically acclaimed project of that time and opened Carey’s appeal to whole new generation of music listeners.
We Belong Together became the biggest hit single from the album, spending a whopping 14 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
The song was released on March 15, 2005 with the era being labelled as her ‘musical comeback’ by critics.
The song’s music video served as a sequel to the visual story started from the song ‘It’s Like That’ – which was the first single from the album.
But We Belong Together gave Mariah her definitive, trademark ballad of the newer decade of music, appealing to a younger demographic. And it still continues to be ranked amongst her top songs of all time, loved by fans and critics alike.
