With 200 million records sold worldwide, Whitney Houston already ranks among the highest selling artists of all time. And with her music being a catalog seller over time, she continues to add more millions to those units every other year, posthumously.
The late songstress has just been awarded 6 new certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), including one for her debut album ‘Whitney Houston’ – and 5 for her past singles.
The diva’s 1985 released debut has now been certified 14x platinum, tying now with Britney Spears and Meat Loaf as the biggest-selling debut albums of all time.
Interestingly, this was a record originally held by Houston herself with her self-titled debut back in the 80’s, until Spears broke it with her debut release – ‘Baby One More Time’ in 1999. The two albums share that spot now – thanks to the new certifications.
Besides the album, the ‘I Will Always Love You’ singer’s older hits like – “So Emotional,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” and “I Look To You” are newly platinum, while her #1 hit from 1986 “Greatest Love Of All’ has earned 2x platinum.
Sealing-in the list of her new certs is her Holiday hit – “Do You Hear What I Hear” – which has been certified Gold.
The new certifications come in the wake of her first-ever official big-screen biopic, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ – presently playing in cinemas across multiple countries.
